Geoffrey Berman, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced the unsealing of an indictment charging seven people with trafficking more than five kilograms of cocaine in Newburgh.
According to the federal complaint, beginning last year, through the beginning of last month, Edwin “Eddy” Guerrier, Carlos Fabian and Fernando Ferrer conspired to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine as part of the operation, while Tamika Sweat, William “Polly” Jones, Maurice “Marky D” Murphy and Eugene Johnson conspired to distribute 500 grams of cocaine.
Three of the suspects were taken into federal custody on March 22, while three others were taken into custody on Tuesday. Sweat remains at large. Each has been charged with narcotics conspiracy.
Guerrier, Fabian and Ferrer face life in prison, with a mandatory minimum term of 10 years behind bars. The other four defendants face a maximum term of 40 years, with no less than five years in prison.
“The partnerships we’ve established and cultivated with local law enforcement agencies proves cases like this are making a significant impact on our communities,” FBI Assistant Director William Sweeney, Jr., stated. “Those same communities are fighting the rising, deadly consequences of illegal drugs that are tearing families and neighborhoods apart. The FBI won’t stop pursuing the suppliers and dealers each and every day, as long as the problem exists.”
“This case is another example of our collaboration with The Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force,” Newburgh Police Chief Doug Solomon added.
“We will continue to build cases against people who sell narcotics in our city. We will utilize all of our local, state and federal partners in accomplishing this goal. This case should act as yet another reminder of how dedicated we are to eliminating crime and making our neighborhoods safer for the residents of The City of Newburgh.”
